Entrepreneurship Looks Fun… Until You’re in the Thick of It!

Writer: Derrickicia BowlesDerrickicia Bowles

Let’s be real, entrepreneurship looks like freedom, money, and calling your own shots… until you’re knee-deep in the chaos, wondering why nobody gave you a heads-up about the struggle!

If you’ve ever found yourself questioning why you signed up for this, trust me, you’re not alone.

In my latest video, I’m breaking down four hard-hitting lessons I wish I knew before starting my business. These aren’t just “nice-to-know” tips—they’re the kind of insights that would have saved me time, energy, and a whole lot of frustration. So, whether you're just getting started or already in the trenches, these lessons will help you navigate the ups and downs with more clarity and confidence.

Lesson 1: Starting Your Business Without a Plan is a Setup for Struggle (00:51)

Winging it might work for some things, but running a business isn’t one of them. Without a solid plan, you’ll waste time chasing every new idea instead of focusing on what actually moves the needle. Start with a clear strategy, know your audience, and map out your offers. Future you will thank you.

Lesson 2: Burnout is Real, and It’s Not a Badge of Honor (06:04)

We love a strong work ethic, but working 24/7 with no breaks? That’s a fast track to burnout. Pace yourself, set work hours, and take care of YOU. Your business is only as strong as the person running it. If you’re running on fumes, everything will suffer—including your creativity and decision-making.

Lesson 3: Everyone Isn’t Your Friend—Set Those Boundaries! (09:36)

Business will show you real quick who’s really in your corner. Not everyone clapping for you wants to see you win, and some people will take advantage if you let them. Know your worth, set boundaries with clients and peers, and protect your energy.

Lesson 4: Pivoting is Not Failing—It’s Growth (13:28)

Sometimes, the vision you start with isn’t the one that will take you to the next level. And that’s okay! Knowing when to pivot is a sign of growth, not failure. Pay attention to what’s working, listen to your audience, and don’t be afraid to shift gears if it means moving forward.
